IX and Louis XIV were all born at Saint Germain en Laye, Louis XIII died
here. Mary Queen of Scots lived here between the ages of 6 and 16. She
married Dauphin François was crowned queen of France. The old castle built in the 12th century was destroyed during the Hundred Years War and restored by Charles V around 1368. In 1539 the whole building was razed except the Chapel built by Saint Louis and the reconstruction of the present castle was entrusted to Pierre Chabiges. Later Mansart built five large pavilions and Le Nôtre drew up the plans for the park. In 1682 the court moved from Saint Germain en Laye to Versailles Additional sights : Maison Debussy 38, rue au Pain This house was the birthplace of the composer Claude Debussy on 22 August 1862. The restored building contains mementos of the composer on the first floor. |
